With a cry of ‘Roderick off, Roy off’, Major Copland urged his Commandos up towards the bow of the ship; galvanising the two assault parties under Captain Donald Roy and Lieutenant Johnny Roderick which now moved, first to the fo’c’sle and then over the side, to drop on the timber roadway that ran along the top of the caisson. The objective of these parties was to block and secure the right and left flanks of the attack on the foreshore to port and starboard after destroying several guns and searchlights in sandbagged emplacements or sited atop buildings. If not eliminated these guns and lights would be free to wreak havoc during the disembarkation of the Campbeltown’s demolition and covering parties as they moved off to search out their targets. Swarming over the starboard bow, Roderick’s Commandos would first have to engage and destroy the German guns in their path and then block and hold the right, eastern flank against counter attack. At the same time Roy’s team, descending from the port bow, would move west, also destroying key gun positions on top of the large pumping station before heading towards Bridge G, which they were to secure and hold, thus maintaining a bridgehead over which the northern demolition parties could make good their escape towards the re-embarkation point at the Old Mole. The neutralization of these two guns in particular was essential as the destruction of the entire pumping station was the objective of Lieutenant Stuart Chant of 2 Commando and the four sergeants of his demolition party.
